Do Rash Guards Keep You Warm? What Surf and BJJ Brands Should Know

Surf, swim, BJJ and MMA customers often ask this question before buying, and a product description that answers it honestly converts better than one that overpromises. This guide explains what a standard rash guard actually does, how thermal and neoprene options compare, the rules around UPF claims, and how to plan a rash guard range by sport and season.

The short answer

Do Rash Guards Keep You Warm?

No, a standard rash guard doesn’t keep you warm in any meaningful way. It is a thin, quick-drying layer of polyester or nylon with spandex, designed to protect skin from rash, sun and abrasion. Real warmth comes from thermal rash guards with a brushed or fleece-lined inner face, or from neoprene tops. For a brand, that difference decides whether a rash guard is a summer product or a year-round one.

What a Standard Rash Guard Does

  • Protects skin. It stops chafing from surfboard wax, paddling and wetsuit seams, and reduces mat burn in grappling sports.
  • Blocks sun. A dense, tightly knit fabric blocks much of the UV that reaches the skin, but any UPF rating on the label has to come from testing.
  • Dries fast. Synthetic fibres shed water quickly, so the garment doesn’t stay heavy and cold once out of the water.
  • Improves hygiene. In BJJ and MMA, a rash guard creates a barrier between skin and training partners or mats.

What it doesn’t do is insulate. A standard rash guard can take the edge off wind chill on a warm day, but in cold water or cool air it adds very little warmth.

A Note on UPF Claims

Rash guards are often sold on sun protection, and “UPF 50+” is a powerful selling point. It is also a claim that needs evidence. Recognised test standards include AS/NZS 4399 in Australia and New Zealand, AATCC 183 with ASTM D6603 labelling guidance in the United States, and EN 13758 in Europe and the UK. If you want a UPF rating on the swing tag, have the finished fabric tested and keep the report on file. Fabric colour, density and stretch all affect the result.

Planning a Rash Guard Range by Sport and Season

  • Surf brands in cooler markets such as the UK, northern Europe and parts of the US coast benefit from a thermal option alongside the standard rash guard.
  • Surf and swim brands in Australia and warmer US states sell on sun protection, so tested UPF and long-sleeve styles matter most.
  • BJJ and MMA academies train indoors, so standard rash guards dominate; the focus is durability, fit and sublimated academy artwork.
  • Swim schools and kids’ ranges need youth sizing, easy-on necklines and bright, high-visibility colours.

Spec Checklist for a Rash Guard Run

  • Fabric composition, weight in GSM and oz/yd², and stretch
  • Standard or thermal build, with inner-face finish if thermal
  • Flatlock seams to prevent chafing
  • Sleeve length, neck finish and a silicone gripper at the hem
  • Sublimated artwork files and Pantone references
  • UPF testing requirement and label wording
  • Size range, including youth sizes, and a graded chart
