What are compression shorts, and who makes them for brands?
Compression shorts are close-fitting shorts knitted from four-way stretch nylon-spandex or poly-spandex, cut smaller than the body so the fabric holds the hips and thighs. Brands commission them from a cut-and-sew factory, which grades the pattern, sews flatlock seams and applies the brand’s own labels.
They sell as team base layers, gym shorts, women’s biker styles and 2-in-1 liners. One pattern block can feed all four, so a 20-piece MOQ per colourway lets a new label test several lengths at once.
Key takeaways
- Jafsu’s gym and activewear fabric runs 220–300 GSM, roughly 6.5–8.9 oz/yd².
- Production starts at 20 pieces per design and colourway; samples start at 1 piece.
- Bulk takes 14–18 working days for 50–300 pieces, 20–25 for 500–1,000+.
- AATCC TM135 measures shrinkage but sets no pass limit: agree one in writing.
- Sizes run S–4XL adult and YS–YXL youth.
Which fabric and GSM should compression shorts use?
Most compression shorts use 75/25 nylon-spandex or a poly-elastane knit at 220–300 GSM. Nylon feels softer and more opaque; polyester takes sublimation. Heavier fabric holds tighter and stays opaque in a squat; lighter fabric breathes better.
| Use | Composition | GSM | oz/yd² | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gym and activewear compression shorts | 75% nylon / 25% spandex, poly-elastane, four-way stretch | 220–300 | 6.5–8.9 | Jafsu published spec |
| Light base layer under team kit | Interlock, micro poly, poly-spandex | 140–220 | 4.1–6.5 | Jafsu published spec |
| Graduated compression wear | Graduated poly-spandex knit | 220–320 | 6.5–9.4 | Industry reference only |
Conversion: GSM × 0.0295 = oz/yd². The third row is a market reference range, not a Jafsu promise.
What spandex percentage gives real compression?
Most compression shorts sit between 15% and 25% spandex. The higher end snaps back harder and feels firmer at the thigh. State the ratio on the tech pack so every reorder matches the first 20 pieces.
Which construction details decide how the shorts fit?
Five points decide fit more than fabric does: inseam, rise, waistband, gusset and leg hem. Put all five on the tech pack, graded across every size from S to 4XL.
Inseam length
Common lengths are 3, 5, 7 and 9 inches. Shorter suits sprint base layers; 7–9 inches cuts thigh rub on long runs.
Waistband
A wide, double-layer waistband stops roll-down. Specify its width, any drawcord, and 1 or 2 inner key pockets.
Gusset
A diamond gusset removes the 4-way seam junction at the crotch, the most common chafe point.
Seams
Flatlock seams sit flat against skin. Jafsu’s activewear line runs 4-needle flatlock, which keeps the seam stretching with the fabric.
Leg hem
Silicone gripper tape or a bonded edge stops the hem riding up. Name 1 of the 2.
Grading
Compression needs negative ease at hip and thigh. Send your size chart, or approve ours on the 1-piece sample.
Which compression shorts styles can a brand develop?
Three styles cover most private label ranges, each patterned from your spec rather than a blank catalogue. All run in adult S–4XL and youth YS–YXL, so a club can dress seniors and juniors from 1 order.
Men’s base layer
A 5–9 inch short worn under football, rugby or basketball kit, usually with a branded waistband.
Women’s biker
High-rise, 5–8 inch styles with a wide waistband, often matched to a bulk leggings range in the same fabric.
2-in-1 liner
A woven outer short over a compression liner. Two fabrics, 1 waistband, often with a phone pocket on the liner thigh.
How can custom compression shorts be branded?
Decoration has to move with the knit. All of it is done in-house at Jafsu, so 1 factory controls print, transfer and label from sample to bulk.
- Sublimation. All-over prints dyed into polyester-rich fabric with no hand feel and no cracking when the fabric stretches. See sublimation printing.
- Silicone heat transfer. Raised logos on the thigh or waistband that stretch with the fabric.
- Screen print. Plastisol or water-based ink, best kept to small placements. See screen printing.
- Private label. Woven or satin neck labels, printed care labels, embossed swing tags and branded polybags. Client artwork and patterns are never reused or resold.
How does an order move from tech pack to delivery?
An order runs in 5 steps, and the fit sample matters most: fabric tension, gusset and waistband are judged on the body before bulk fabric is cut.

Timings run from sample approval and deposit. Samples are paid by PayPal, Remitly, Western Union or bank wire. Courier delivery to the UK, USA, Canada, Europe and Australia adds 4–6 business days.
How are compression shorts checked before shipping?
Shrinkage after washing is measured under AATCC Test Method 135, which reports change in length and width after set wash and dry cycles. It sets no maximum, so agree the tolerance with the factory before bulk and write it into the order.
Also check stretch recovery, gusset seam strength and squat opacity. Before the 50% balance is paid, you receive QC photos and video of the finished run.
Pakistan’s knitwear exports reached $4.966bn in FY2025-26, per the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
When is Jafsu the wrong choice for compression shorts?
Three kinds of project are better served elsewhere. Saying so up front saves you a sample fee.
Seamless knit
Jafsu is a cut-and-sew factory. Shorts knitted as 1 seamless tube need a circular-knitting mill.
Medical pressure claims
A certified mmHg pressure class is a medical-hosiery product, tested in a lab. It is not a sportswear build.
10,000+ piece programmes
Very large single-style runs usually price better at a mill with its own knitting and dyeing.
A 2017 meta-analysis of 23 studies in Sports Medicine found small recovery benefits from compression garments, unaffected by pressure under or over 15 mmHg. Keep product copy to fit and feel unless you hold test data.
Compression shorts questions buyers ask first
For brands placing a first order of 20 pieces or more.
What is the minimum order for custom compression shorts?
Production starts at 20 pieces per design and colourway, and sizes can be mixed inside those 20 pieces. A single sample can be made first so fit and fabric are approved before bulk.
What fabric is best for compression shorts?
Most compression shorts use 75% nylon and 25% spandex or a poly-elastane knit with four-way stretch. Nylon feels softer and more opaque, while polyester-rich fabric is the better choice for all-over sublimation printing.
What GSM should compression shorts be?
Gym and activewear compression shorts usually sit between 220 and 300 GSM, about 6.5 to 8.9 oz per square yard. Lighter base layers under team kit can run from 140 to 220 GSM.
Which inseam lengths can be made?
Any graded length on your tech pack can be made. Common choices are 3, 5, 7 and 9 inches, with shorter lengths for sprint and team base layers and longer lengths for running and training.
Can compression shorts be sublimation printed?
Yes. Sublimation dyes the print into polyester-rich stretch fabric, so it does not crack when the shorts stretch. Silicone heat-transfer logos and small screen prints are also done in-house.
Do you make women’s and youth compression shorts?
Yes. Women’s high-waist and biker styles are made alongside men’s base layers, in adult sizes S to 4XL and youth sizes YS to YXL.
Do you ship compression shorts to the USA and UK?
Yes. Orders ship door to door by DHL, FedEx or UPS in 4 to 6 business days to the UK, USA, Canada, Europe and Australia. Larger runs can go by air cargo or sea freight.
How is shrinkage tested on compression shorts?
Shrinkage after home laundering is measured under AATCC Test Method 135. The method sets no pass limit, so the allowed percentage is agreed between buyer and factory and written into the order.
