What Decides the Cost of Manufacturing a Hoodie?
A hoodie’s manufacturing cost is the sum of seven lines: fabric, cutting and sewing, decoration, trims, labels and packaging, sampling, and freight and duty, with one-off setup costs shared across the quantity. Fabric weight, decoration and quantity usually move the price most. Any single price you read online is only true for one exact spec.
Change the fabric from 320 to 450 GSM, add an embroidered back, or drop from 300 pieces to 20, and the number changes. That is why an itemised quote is worth more than a headline price: it shows exactly what you are paying for, line by line.
The Seven Lines of a Hoodie Costing
A good quote shows each of these separately. If a supplier gives you one number, ask for the breakdown.
Fabric
Body fleece or French terry plus cuff and hem rib. Weight, composition and a stock or custom colour set this line, usually the largest.
Cutting and sewing
The labour to cut and assemble the panels. A kangaroo pocket, a double-layer hood, a zip or extra panels all add minutes per garment.
Decoration
Priced per placement: screen prints by colours and screens, embroidery by stitch count and size, DTG by print area.
Trims
Drawcords, aglets, eyelets, zips and any custom hardware such as branded pullers.
Labels and packaging
Woven neck label, care and size labels, swing tag and polybag. With us they come with every private label build, and still show as a line.
Sampling
A one-off piece to approve fit and finish before bulk. Ours is one piece, in 7–10 working days, paid 100% in advance.
Freight and duty
Express, air or sea to your door, then import duty and customs fees at your end. Not in the factory price, but part of your cost.
One-off setup costs
Patterns, cutting markers, print screens and embroidery digitising are paid once per design and shared across the quantity.
What Moves the Price of a Hoodie Most
Start with fabric. It is the first line you decide and the one that moves most. A 450 GSM brushed fleece uses far more yarn than a 320 GSM loopback, and the difference shows up in every piece.
Fix the weight and composition before you compare quotes. Otherwise you are comparing two different hoodies, not two prices. Our custom hoodie blocks run from 320 to 450+ GSM in French terry and three-thread fleece, cotton or 80/20.
| Choice | Keeps cost down | Pushes cost up |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric weight | 320–360 GSM | 450+ GSM |
| Composition | Cotton-polyester blend, such as 80/20 | 100% cotton or organic cotton |
| Colour | A stock fabric colour | A custom Pantone-dyed colour |
| Fit | Regular fit | Oversized with a dropped shoulder, which uses more fabric |
| Construction | Pullover, single-layer hood | Full zip, double-layer hood, extra panels |
| Decoration | One placement, one method | Several placements, large embroidery, puff or specialty finishes |
| Quantity | Reaching a price break: 100, 300, 500, 1,000+ | Many colourways, each with a small run |
| Shipping | Sea freight for large volumes | Express courier for heavy cartons |

Why 20 Hoodies Cost More Each Than 300
Unit price ≈ cost per piece + (one-off setup costs ÷ quantity)
Fabric, sewing and labels cost roughly the same per piece at any quantity. Setup costs do not: a pattern, a cutting marker, a set of print screens or an embroidery file is paid for once per design. At 20 pieces each hoodie carries a larger share of that setup; at 300, a much smaller one.
Our price breaks fall at 100, 300, 500 and 1,000+ pieces. A smaller run still costs far less in total, and you hold far less stock you might not sell. For a first drop, the right quantity is the one you can sell through. Guide 03 explains how minimums are counted.
Landed Cost, and How to Read a Hoodie Quote
Landed cost per hoodie = (factory price × quantity + sampling + freight + import duty + customs fees) ÷ quantity
The factory price is only part of what a hoodie costs you. Import duty depends on the garment’s commodity code, its fibre content, where it was made and where it is going, and rates change. Check your garment’s code before you set a retail price:
- USA: Harmonized Tariff Schedule
- UK: UK Trade Tariff
- EU: TARIC database
For a first import, a customs broker or freight forwarder can confirm the code and the fees at your end.
What a hoodie quote should show
- Fabric named with weight in GSM and composition
- Decoration priced per placement, with method and size
- Labels, tags and packaging listed
- Sample cost and lead time
- Payment terms in writing
- Shipping method, and what is excluded
- The unit price at the next price break
Questions About Hoodie Manufacturing Costs
Why are blank hoodies so much cheaper than custom ones?
Stock blanks are made in very large runs of one standard style, so setup costs almost vanish per piece. A custom hoodie is cut from your pattern, fabric and colour in a small run, and it carries your label instead of the blank maker’s.
Is it cheaper to print on blanks than to cut and sew?
Often, per piece and at low quantities. The trade-off is the supplier’s fit, fabric and neck label. Cut and sew gives you your own pattern, fabric weight and branding, which is what turns a print into a brand.
Does embroidery cost more than screen printing on a hoodie?
It depends on the artwork. Embroidery is priced by stitch count and size, screen printing by the number of colours and screens. A small logo can cost about the same either way, while large or many-colour designs change the answer, so ask for both methods priced per placement.
How can I lower the cost per hoodie?
Choose a mid-range fabric weight and a stock colour, keep to one or two decoration placements, reach the next price break with fewer colourways rather than more designs, and ship large volumes by sea.
How quickly can I get an exact price?
